Before joining Marquette, Smart was named head coach of the University of Texas men’s basketball team in 2015.
In his first season at Texas, he led the Longhorns to a 20-13 record and a sixth-seed in the NCAA tournament, surpassing “all realistic expectations,” according to the Houston Chronicle. He has won several coaching awards, including the Big East Coach of the Year (2023).
