Severe Turbulence Hits Singapore Airlines Flight Leaving One Dead and Multiple Injured

A Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence, resulting in one fatality and several injuries, the airline confirmed on Tuesday, May 21 2024.

The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft was forced to divert to Bangkok due to the turbulence, as reported on the Singapore Airlines Facebook page.

While the airline did not specify the exact number of injuries, it stated that 211 passengers and 18 crew members were on board at the time of the incident.

The flight landed safely in Bangkok at 3:45 p.m. local time (4:45 a.m. ET) on Tuesday.

“We are working with the local authorities in Thailand to provide the necessary medical assistance, and sending a team to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance needed,” the company stated in its post.

The airline emphasized that their priority is to offer all possible assistance to passengers and crew members affected by the turbulence. They extended their condolences to those impacted by the incident.

Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam expressed his condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased in a statement shared on his social media accounts.

“We do not have the details of those affected, but know that the government ministries and agencies, as well as SIA, are doing their utmost to support all those affected and working with the authorities in Bangkok, where the plane had been diverted to,” Shanmugaratnam said.

Singapore’s Minister for Transport, Chee Hong Tat, also conveyed his deep sadness regarding the incident in a statement on social media.

“Ministry of Transport, Singapore, Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport officials as well as SIA [Singapore Airlines] staff are providing support to the affected passengers and their families,” he stated.
