Sergey Surovikin, a general in the Russian army, was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces in 2017 and held the position until Vladimir Putin fired him in 2023. He was born on October 11th, 1966. He served as the commander of all Russian forces in the Russian invasion of Ukraine from October 2022 to January 2023. He is a veteran of the Soviet-Afghan War, Tajikistani Civil War, Second Chechen War, and the Russian military participation in the Syrian Civil War.

Surovikin led a unit that killed three anti-coup protesters during the failed Soviet coup d’état in 1991; for this, he was imprisoned for several months but was never found guilty. A new organization within the Russian army, the Main Directorate of the Military Police, was established with significant help from him.
