The Baltimore Police Department detective died from a gunshot wound to the head the day before he was scheduled to testify in court in the Gun Trace Task Force case, which is the subject of HBO’s We Own This City.
Suiter was shot after darting into a vacant area in a West Baltimore neighbourhood. According to the Baltimore Sun, police later stated Suiter was shot with his gun, which was discovered beneath his body, and his death was deemed a homicide by a medical examiner.

According to the Independent Review Board’s report: “The evidence simply does not point to anyone but Detective Suiter firing the fatal shot.
“The evidence also does not support the finding that Detective Suiter fired the gun inadvertently. This terrible reality is all that remains.”
Suiter’s family has contested this finding, telling the publication that he was a “well-regarded detective” who “was in excellent spirits in the days and weeks preceding his death” and thus could not have committed suicide.
