Scotty James’s first snowboard was a display board in a Vancouver shop rather than a snowboard. Because James and his father couldn’t find a board small enough for him, they purchased the display board for $10.
He began competing at the age of six, and after defeating the older kids, he began travelling for competitions at the age of ten. Europe and America were the primary locations for snowboarding training and competitions at the time.
His mother travelled with him, homeschooling him and providing tutors as needed. “There’s been a lot of sacrifice from my parents to get me here and I’m very grateful,” James said.

Scotty James was Australia’s flag bearer at the 2018 Winter Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the halfpipe. James earned a near-perfect score of 99.00 on his second run in the men’s final of the US Snowboarding Grand Prix in December 2022.
Scotty James’s 99.00 score was his highest ever in a halfpipe event. His run began with a switch McTwist Japan with massive amplitude, followed by cab 1440 stalefish, frontside 1080 tail grab, cab 900 indy, and ended with a switch backside double cork 1260 indy.
