Saqlain Mushtaq was born on 29 December 1976 in Lahore, Pakistan to a government clerk. He was raised alongside two elder brothers: Sibtain, who also played first-class cricket for Lahore, and Zulqurnain.
Saqlain Mushtaq, at the age of 14, went to the Govt. M.A.O. College Lahore where he played for three years and won the championship each year. There he was coached by Mumtaz Akhtar Butt. He never played cricket at school level, but started playing for Zareef Memorial Cricket Club Second Eleven when he was only 13.
Saqlain Mushtaq was coached by Ahmad Hassan and his brothers at the club level. the Govt. M.A.O. College Lahore, where the college and won the championship for three consecutive years.
Saqlain Mushtaq is regarded as one of the best spin bowlers in the history of cricket and is best known for pioneering the “doosra”, a leg break delivery bowled with an off break action. Saqlain Mushtaq was the fastest to reach the milestones of 200 and 250 wickets in ODIs and vntil 2016, he was the fastest bowler in the history of ODI cricket to take 100 wickets.

Saqlain Mushtaq was initially coached by his brothers at the college level at the age of 14, later he started playing in first-class cricket with successful performance and added to Pakistan A team. He started his first-class career in 1994–95 at the age of 17.

In September 1995, Saqlain Mushtaq got international recognition, after he took seven wickets for the PCB Patron’s Eleven against the visiting Sri Lankans. He also represented Surrey for eight successive seasons from 1997 to 2004. However, his international career with Pakistan effectively ended in 2004
Saqlain Mushtaq signed for Ireland for the C&G Trophy in February 2006, along with teammate Abdul Razzaq. Later in February 2007, Sussex announced that Saqlain had signed a two-year contract with them and on 26 September 2007, In February 2006 was released by the county at his request.
Saqlain Mushtaq was re-signed by Surrey on 8 October 2007 but was later released by Surrey on 28 October. He then joined Old Whitgiftians CC to play in the Surrey Championship in April 2009. Saqlain Mushtaq, after relocating to Leicestershire, joined Syston Town Cricket Club, playing in the Everards County League in 2010.
Saqlain Mushtaq made his Test debut in September 1995 against Sri Lanka at Arbab Niaz Stadium, Peshawar. He had played 49 Test matches for Pakistan during 1995 and 2004 and accumulated 208 wickets at an average of 29.83. Saqlain made his One Day International (ODI) debut in September 1995 against Sri Lanka at the Municipal Stadium, Gujranwala.
Saqlain Mushtaq was later appointed by the ECB as England’s spin consultant for the home series against Pakistan on 28 May 2016. He was appointed as the interim head coach of Pakistan national cricket team by PCB after Misbah-ul-Haq’s resignation from the post on 6 September 2021.
