Ridley Scott is a British film director and producer who was born on November 30, 1937, in South Shields, Durham (now Tyne and Wear), England. His films are renowned for their distinctive aesthetic and intricate details.
Since Scott’s father served in the military, the family moved around a lot throughout the war. They made their home in northeastern England’s Teeside metropolitan area after the war. Scott studied at the West Hartlepool College of Art, where he graduated in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in design.

He later earned a master’s degree in graphic arts from the Royal College of Art in London in the early 1960s. After working on British television as a set designer and director, he started directing commercials for his own business in 1967, eventually amassing more than 2,000.

He paid special attention to visual stylization in his advertisements and included uncommon ambient lighting effects when he started directing features in 1977. His first film, The Duellists, set in the Napoleonic era, won the best first-feature award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Following Alien (1979), a science-fiction-horror film, Blade Runner (1982; recut 1992), a dystopian fable (based on a Philip K. Dick novel), and Legend (1985), an allegorical fairy tale, were his three successive films. Alien and Blade Runner were both praised as classics.
