American football quarterback Samuel Darnold, who plays for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL), was born on June 5, 1997. At the University of Southern California, where he played football in college, he became the first freshman to earn the Archie Griffin Award. The New York Jets selected him third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

He was the youngest opening-day starting quarterback in the NFL since the AFL-NFL merger at age 21. From 2018 to 2020, Darnold started for the Jets, but owing to his inconsistency and injuries, he was moved to the Carolina Panthers in 2021. He spent two years with the Panthers before joining the 49ers.
Darnold first turned down the offer to play linebacker from USC defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox.
