Sal Bando was a Major League Baseball third baseman and general manager. Sal Bando died on Friday, January 20, 2023, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. According to his family, he had been battling cancer for the previous five years.

He is best known for his eleven seasons with the Oakland Athletics, where he rose to prominence as the captain of the dynasty that won three consecutive World Series championships from 1972 to 1974.
Bando finished second to teammate Vida Blue for the 1971 American League (AL) Most Valuable Player Award after helping lead the team to the first of five straight division titles.

Sal Bando was drafted in the sixth round of the 1965 Major League Baseball (MLB) draught by the Kansas City Athletics.
In 1966, he made his MLB debut for the Athletics. On May 30, 1969, manager Hank Bauer named Bando team captain.
He was named the American League’s starting third baseman in the 1969 MLB All-Star Game.
Sal Bando was named to three consecutive MLB All-Star Games (1972-1974) and led the American League with 64 extra-base hits, 32 doubles, and 295 total bases in the 1973 season during the “Swingin’ A’s” era. He retired after the 1981 season.
