Ryan Nugent-Hopkins attended Suncrest Elementary School and Burnaby North Secondary School, where he was a member of the school’s hockey academy. While attending Burnaby North Secondary, Nugent-Hopkins played minor ice hockey for the Burnaby Winter Club.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins represented Burnaby in the 2005 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, leading his team to a quarter-final berth and a provincial championship later in the season.

He competed in the Western Canada Bantam Championships in 2007 and 2008. Nugent-Hopkins was named Tournament MVP and made the All-Star Team during the 2008 Mac’s AAA midget hockey tournament.

In recognition of his sportsmanship, leadership, and hockey skill, Nugent-Hopkins was named the 2008 BC Minor Hockey Player of the Year.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins made his NHL debut in the 2011-12 season and immediately made an impact for the Oilers, scoring 52 points in his rookie year.

Nugent-Hopkins has also represented Canada in international competition, winning a gold medal at the 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and a silver medal at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championships. He was also a member of the Canadian team that won the 2015 IIHF World Championships.
