According to the Sheriff’s office, responders were called to a beach in Destin, Florida, around 2:12 p.m. local time, as a group of people swimming in the Gulf of Mexico near sandbar struggled to make their way back to shore. One of the individuals who was not breathing was identified as Ryan Mallett. He was pronounced dead after getting to a nearby hospital.

It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett. Coach Mallett was a beloved coach and educator. We ask that you remember his family, team, students, fellow coaches, and the White Hall School District staff in your prayers,” White Hall, the school where Mallet coached at the high school level wrote on social media.

He was drafted by New England Patriots in the 2011 NFL Drafts. He made his preseason debut in the Patriots’ first preseason game, a 47-12 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 11 that same year.

Mallett was promoted to second-string signal caller behind Tom Brady in the 2012 season. In 2013, he was listed as the #2 quarterback on the Patriots’ depth chart behind Tom Brady and ahead of third-string quarterback Tim Tebow.

He was traded to the Houston Texans for a conditional sixth-round pick on August 31, 2014. He would be the Texans’ primary backup until November 5, 2014, when he was named the starting quarterback for the Texans by head coach Bill O’Brien, replacing Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was moved down one slot to 2nd on the depth chart.

Mallet signed with Baltimore Ravens in 2015 and also signed a one-year contract extension in 2017.
