Rupi Kaur was born on 4 October 1992 into a Sikh family in Punjab, India. However, she and her family embarked on a transformative journey when she was just three years old.

Rupi’s father, whose name remains undisclosed, had left for Canada before her birth, driven by the aspirations of a better life. Despite the geographical distance, he remained dedicated to providing for his family, sending back essential supplies and provisions.

In their early days in Canada, the Kaur family faced financial instability. Living in a one-bedroom basement flat, they all shared a single bed. Rupi resided with her parents and her three younger siblings, creating an environment characterized by unity and resilience.

The family eventually found their home in Brampton, Ontario, a city that offered a welcoming and vibrant community, particularly for those of South Asian descent. Rupi’s father worked as a truck driver to provide for his loved ones, a testament to his dedication and sacrifice.

The influence of art was woven into Rupi’s upbringing. Her mother practiced painting, a hobby that she wished to pass down to her daughter. At the age of five, Rupi took up her mother’s passion for painting, a process initiated with a paintbrush and an innate talent.

Poetry was not a foreign concept in Rupi’s household. She recalled her father’s deep connection with Punjabi poetry, even when he lived in Japan. He would write verses to Rupi’s mother, who was also an artist.

In an interview with girllbosss, Rupi Kaur provided insights into her family dynamics. She acknowledged that her family, like many others in her community, wasn’t openly expressive with affection, and sentiments like “I’m proud of you” or “I love you” were rarely exchanged.

However, she emphasized that actions spoke louder than words. Rupi humorously shared anecdotes about how her father, albeit reserved with his feelings, proudly shared her achievements with everyone he encountered, making her presence felt in the most unexpected places.
