American professional basketball player Rudy Gay, who plays for the Golden State Warriors in the National Basketball Association (NBA), was born on August 17, 1986. The forward, who is 6’8″, played collegiate basketball for the University of Connecticut before the Houston Rockets selected him eighth overall in the 2006 NBA Draft. A few days later, he was dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Gay was selected by the Houston Rockets with the eighth overall choice in the 2006 NBA Draft. On July 12, the Houston Rockets exchanged Gay and Stromile Swift for Shane Battier and sent them to the Memphis Grizzlies. After being acquired by the Grizzlies, Gay promptly signed his rookie-scale contract with the organization. As a rookie, Gay played in 78 games (43 starts), averaging 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 27.0 minutes.
