Ruby Hunter was born in Goat Island, near Renmark, South Australia, on October 31, 1955, and died on February 17, 2010, at the age of 54 years as a result of a heart attack.

Ruby Hunter was the co-author of books titled “Butcher Paper, Texta, Blackboard and Chalk: A Songbook” and “Took the Children Away.” The other co-author of the books was her husband, Archie Roach.

Ruby Hunter and Archie Roach were recipients of the Individual Award in the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award in 2009.

Ruby Hunter won the Female Artist of the Year and the Outstanding Contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music at the Deadly Awards. Ruby Hunter was inducted into the National Indigenous Music Awards.
