On December 1, 1955, Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus to a white passenger. Her act of defiance sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a seminal moment in the Civil Rights Movement that lasted for over a year and resulted in the desegregation of Montgomery’s public transportation system.
