Junior Galette, a former teammate of Powell’s during their time with the New Orleans Saints, broke the heart-wrenching news on social media on January 15, 2024, leaving the sports community in shock and grief.
A native of Moreno Valley, California, Powell’s journey in football began at Rancho Verde High School, where he showcased his athletic prowess playing as a defensive end, linebacker, and tight end.
His exceptional skills and dedication to the sport earned him a spot in the illustrious 2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, where he not only represented his high school but was also voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Regarded as a five-star college recruit by Rivals.com, Powell held the prestigious position as the No. 1 prospect in the class of 2010, irrespective of position. This early recognition foreshadowed a promising career that would leave an indelible mark on the football landscape.

Opting to forego his remaining college eligibility, Powell ventured into professional football when the New Orleans Saints selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the 169th pick.
His rookie season in 2014 saw him play in 14 games for the Saints, showcasing his talent on the grand stage. Despite facing challenges, including being waived ahead of the 2015 season, Powell’s determination and resilience saw him rejoin the Saints later, though he spent time on injured reserve.
Powell’s professional journey extended beyond the Saints, with stints at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, and Seattle Seahawks between 2015 and 2016.
His final professional stop came with the Alliance of American Football’s Orlando Apollos, where he signed in 2018 for the 2019 season. Unfortunately, the AAF ceased operations in April 2019, marking the end of Powell’s professional football endeavors.
As we remember Ronald Fredrick Powell, we honor not only his contributions to the world of football but also the indomitable spirit that defined his journey.
