Lewis Black grew up in a middle-class Jewish family in the Burnt Mills neighborhood of Silver Spring, Maryland. In Washington, D.C., Lewis Black worked at the Appalachian Regional Commission and began performing stand-up comedy.

Lewis Black’s career in theater took off as a playwright. He wrote the musical “The Czar of Rock and Roll” in 1990.

In 2015, Lewis Black lent his voice to the character Anger in the Pixar film “Inside Out” and will reprise the role in the sequel, “Inside Out 2”. Lewis Black is also a spokesperson for the Aruba Tourism Authority, appearing in television ads.
Lewis Black has been an “ambassador for voting rights” for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) since 2013. When not touring, Black resides in Manhattan but also maintains a residence in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
