Ron Thompson, the versatile character actor known for his roles in Ralph Bakshi’s “American Pop” and the 1970s TV series “Baretta,” passed away at the age of 83 in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 13, 2024.

His friend, Professor Rel Dowdell of Hampton University, confirmed the news, although no cause of death was disclosed.
Before his successful acting career, Thompson had a brief stint as a rock singer in the 1960s under the name Ronnie Thompson, recording several singles.
He also originated the role of Shanty Mulligan in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “No Place to Be Somebody” and earned acclaim for his lead performance in “Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?” which won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award in 1973.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1941, Thompson moved to Miami, Florida with his family at a young age. His passion for performing led him to New York City, where he began acting on live TV dramas.
Over the years, he transitioned into a successful career in both television and film, making notable appearances in various shows and movies.
Professor Dowdell, reflecting on Thompson’s legacy, described him as a versatile and talented actor who was respected by many in the industry for his dedication to his craft.
Thompson was married to actress Diane Sommerfield, who passed away in 2001.
