Romano Mazzoli Obituary

Romano Mazzoli was a Kentucky-born politician and lawyer. Mazzoli was born in Louisville and graduated from St. Xavier High School, a boy’s preparatory school run by the Xaverian Brothers.

He received a magna cum laude degree from the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, in 1954, and a first-year law degree from the University of Louisville in 1960. Mazzoli was a member of the Kentucky Senate from 1968 to 1970.

From 1971 to 1995, he served as a Democrat in the United States House of Representatives, representing Louisville, Kentucky and its suburbs.

He and Senator Alan Simpson were the primary architects of major immigration reform legislation.

He taught at Bellarmine University and was the Ralph S. Petrilli Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Louisville Law School for the Fall 1995 semester before returning to the law school as faculty.

Mazzoli was a fellow at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Institute of Politics in 2002.

In June 2004, he received his Masters of Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Romano Mazzoli died on November 1, 2022, just one day before his 90th birthday, at the age of 89.
