Roland Griffiths, a professor of behavioral science and psychiatry, passed away on Monday at his home in Baltimore. His groundbreaking work in the study of psychedelics helped launch a new era of research into those once-banned substances and reintroduced the mystical into scientific discourse about them. He was 77. William and Sylvie (Redmond) Griffiths welcomed Roland Redmond Griffiths into the world on July 19, 1946 in Glen Cove, New York.

A renowned psychopharmacologist and professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Dr. Griffiths has spent decades researching the factors underlying drug dependence. Numerous articles on cocaine and opiates, sedatives and alcohol, and nicotine and caffeine were published by him.

Griffiths was identified as having metastatic colon cancer in the beginning of 2023. On October 16, 2023, he passed away at home in Baltimore at the age of 77.

He was finishing a report describing a study he had done in which clergy from many faiths were given high doses of psilocybin to examine how it would alter their life and work at the time of his death.
