A brain tumor caused the forward prospect for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Rodion Amirov, to pass away on Monday. He was 21.

A diagnosis was made in February 2022 for Amirov, the No. 15 overall draft pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. The 2021–22 Kontinental Hockey League season saw him play with Salavat Yulaev Ufa, where he recorded three points (one goal, two assists) in 10 games before suffering an injury.

Following the conclusion of his fourth round of chemotherapy, Amirov was honored by the Maple Leafs in November during their Hockey Fights Cancer night. He continued his recovery at the time while at home in Russia. On April 15, 2021, Amirov and the Maple Leafs agreed on terms of his rookie contract.
