Former NHL player Rodion Amirov, who the Maple Leafs selected in the first round, passed away on Monday at the young age of 21, the team announced.

In a statement, Brendan Shanahan, president and alternate governor of the Maple Leafs, said: “This devastating death has rocked the entire Maple Leaf organization. Rodion left a lasting impression on our staff and his Toronto supporters during his brief trips.

Throughout the course of his valiant battle, Rodion’s optimism encouraged everyone around him. To see a young man with so much promise snatched from us so soon is very painful. We share in the loss of Rodion’s family and friends and send our sincere sympathies to them.
