In February 2022, Amirov, the No. 15 overall draft pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, received a diagnosis. He participated in the 2021–22 Kontinental Hockey League season for Salavat Yulaev Ufa, recording three points (one goal, two assists) in 10 games before suffering an injury.

Amirov was honored by the Maple Leafs in November, following the conclusion of his fourth round of chemotherapy, on their Hockey Fights Cancer night. He was recuperating at home in Russia at the time. On April 15, 2021, Amirov and the Maple Leafs agreed to a rookie deal.
