Rod Holcomb Obituary

Rod Holcomb, the Emmy-winning director renowned for his work on “ER” and episodes of “Lost,” “China Beach,” “Wolf,” and “The Six Million Dollar Man,” passed away at the age of 80. Holcomb succumbed to a long illness on January 24 in Los Angeles, as announced by the Directors Guild of America on Friday.

Holcomb’s son, Josh Holcomb, shared his sentiments, stating, “Dad was an inspiration to me. He always stayed humble and never lost his desire to mentor young people who were making their way into the industry.” Holcomb’s manager, Geoffrey Brandt, revealed that the acclaimed director peacefully passed away with his wife Jane, son Josh, and daughter Natasha by his side. He was remembered as a “gentle giant” and a “kind friend.”

The Directors Guild of America expressed deep sorrow over Holcomb’s passing, recognizing him as a visionary director whose impact on television direction and the creative rights of television directors was significant. DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter acknowledged Holcomb’s influential role as a pilot director on shows like “China Beach” and “ER,” emphasizing his contribution to establishing a cinematic style in television through innovative techniques such as the Steadicam.

Glatter highlighted Holcomb’s broader legacy, extending beyond the lens. Through his dedication to guild service, including participation in negotiating committees and serving as the co-chair of the Television Creative Rights Committee, Holcomb advocated for essential protections that allowed television directors to bring their unique visions to life without constraints. The DGA expressed their deepest condolences to Holcomb’s wife, Jane, and his family, acknowledging the loss of his warm, steadfast presence and anticipating that his caring leadership and directorial mastery will continue to inspire directors for generations to come.
