Broughton, who was up in Lower Hutt, moved to Otago, New Zealand, in 1961 to pursue a diploma in physical education. Her reputation as a top netball player had already been cemented by the previous year’s selection as a non-traveling reserve for New Zealand.

She represented Hutt Valley, Otago, and Southland during her playing career, serving as captain of the latter two. She served as the leader of both New Zealand and Otago Universities.
Broughton oversaw the Sting for 100 games during a time when it was dominant, returning a remarkable 82 percent victory rate, which was 14% higher than any other coach.
