Robitussin recall: Why was Robitussin recalled?

If you have a bottle of Robitussin cough syrup in your medicine cabinet, you might want to check the label. Haleon, the company that makes Robitussin, has issued a voluntary recall of some of its products due to microbial contamination.

The recall affects eight lots of Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult and Robitussin Honey CF Max Nighttime Adult cough syrups with expiration dates through 2025 and 2026. These products are used to relieve symptoms of cold, flu, hay fever, or other respiratory allergies.

The microbial contamination could cause serious or even life-threatening infections in people who have weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV, cancer, or organ transplants. The infection could result in fungemia, which is the presence of fungus in the blood. Symptoms of fungemia include pain, fatigue, confusion, lesions, sweating, and itching.

Healthy people are unlikely to develop life-threatening infections from contaminated cough syrup, but they could still experience some adverse effects. Therefore, Haleon advises consumers to stop using the recalled products immediately and contact their healthcare provider if they have any concerns.

Haleon is notifying its distributors and customers about the recall and providing instructions for the return of the recalled products. Consumers can also reach out to Haleon’s consumer relations team for more information. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is aware of the recall and urges consumers to report any adverse reactions to its MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.

To check if your Robitussin cough syrup is part of the recall, look for the lot number and expiration date on the bottom right corner of the label with dosing information. The recalled lot numbers are:

• Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult 4oz: T10810 — October 31, 2025
• Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult 8oz: T08730, T08731, T08732, T08733 — May 31, 2025 and T10808 — September 30, 2025
• Robitussin Honey CF Max NT Adult 8oz: T08740, T08742 — June 30, 2026
