Robert S. Bennett, one of the top criminal defense attorneys in the country, passed away on Sunday at his home in Washington. He was well-known for representing celebrities and the rich and famous who were implicated in scandals. He was 84.

On September 1992, Mr. Bennett found himself hopping between courtrooms at the federal courthouse in Washington, sometimes on the same day, to defend two former secretary of defense at once: Republican Caspar W. Weinberger and Democrat Clark M. Clifford.

With regard to President Clinton, whose liaison with Monica Lewinsky was revealed in the Paula Jones lawsuit, Mr. Bennett was quick to tell reporters that the Jones filing was “tabloid trash with a legal caption.”

In 1969, Mr. Bennett wed Ellen Gilbert. His wife, two further daughters, Catherine and Sarah Bennett, and six grandkids all survive him, in addition to their daughter Peggy and his brother.
