Robert S. Bennett passed away on Sunday at his home in Washington, D.C. He was regarded as one of the top criminal defense attorneys in the country and was well-known for representing celebrities and the rich and famous who were implicated in scandals. He was 84.

In September 1992, Mr. Bennett found himself hopping between courtrooms in the federal courthouse in Washington, sometimes on the same day, to represent two former secretary of defense, one of whom was a Democrat named Clark M. Clifford and the other was a Republican named Caspar W. Weinberger.

When it came to President Clinton, whose liaison with Monica Lewinsky was revealed in the Paula Jones lawsuit, Mr. Bennett was quick to tell reporters that the Jones filing was “tabloid trash with a legal caption.”

In addition to his 54-year-old wife Ellen, Bob is survived by his three daughters, Catherine, Peggy, and Sarah, as well as his younger brother William “Bill” Bennett. Bennett represented Caspar Weinberger during the Iran-Contra controversy, Clark Clifford in the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) scandal, and Paul Wolfowitz in the World Bank Scandal. Bennett also represented Judith Miller in the grand jury investigation case involving the Plame affair.
