World-renowned politician Robert Fico was born in Topolcany, Slovakia, on September 15, 1964. Robert is also well-known for serving as the second-term leader of the Direction-Social Democracy party and as the Communist Prime Minister of Slovakia. He assumed office in 2012. In 2013, he declared that he was running for president.

SMER garnered 29.1% of the vote in the 2006 elections, which it won. the severely unpopular austerity changes that had been pushed through by the then-ministers Rudolf Zajac and Martin Fronc in the healthcare and education sectors. The election triumph followed a campaign centered on rolling back these reforms. The People’s Party-Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) of Vladimr Meiar and the Slovak National Party (SNS) of Ján Slota joined forces to establish a coalition government afterwards.

Ladislav, Fico’s brother, is a business owner in the construction industry, while Lucia Chabadová, his sister, is a prosecutor. Up to the age of six, Fico lived with his family in the village of Hruovany before they relocated to the nearby town of Topoľčany.
