Robert De Niro’s father lived nearby and was close to De Niro throughout his childhood. Known as “Bobby Milk” because of his pale complexion, De Niro befriended many street kids in Little Italy, much to his father’s chagrin. Some, on the other hand, have remained his lifelong friends.
His mother was raised Presbyterian but later became an atheist, and his father was a lapsed Catholic since the age of 12.
Despite his parents’ wishes, De Niro was secretly baptised into the Catholic Church while staying with his grandparents during his parents’ divorce.
