Over 2000 individuals residing in Gomoa Adawukwa, Mampong, Effutu Atekyedo, and Ekuroful communities in the Central Region have been displaced due to flooding caused by the overflowing Ayensu River.

The flooding occurred as a result of the river’s diversion by a contractor working on the expansion of the Kasoa-Winneba Highway.
More than 200 homes have been submerged, with three completely collapsing under the force of the floodwaters. Additionally, vast stretches of farmland have been destroyed.
Isaac Ephraim Okine, an official from the Effutu branch of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), described the situation as dire.
NADMO has pledged to provide assistance to the displaced individuals, many of whom are now seeking refuge with relatives and friends.

During a visit to the affected area, the Gomoa Police Service was observed working tirelessly to manage traffic flow on the Accra-Cape Coast route, aiming to prevent any accidents.
Mr. Okine expressed sympathy for the affected residents, noting that data on them had been forwarded to relevant authorities for further action.
Some of the victims in Adawukwa recounted how water levels began rising on June 5, prompting community leaders to alert the Gomoa East District Assembly. Unfortunately, by evening, the water had overflowed onto the highway and into the nearby communities.
The affected residents have appealed to the government and non-governmental organizations for assistance during this challenging time.
