In order to reach the pinnacle of Canadian music, MacNeil overcame the early trauma of cleft palate surgery, a broken marriage, and incapacitating stage fright. Despite these difficulties, MacNeil relocated to Toronto in order to perform on the regional folk scene, and in 1975, she published her debut album, Born a Woman.

Through the course of her career, MacNeil has been awarded five honorary degrees, has released 24 albums, won three Juno Awards, a SOCAN National Achievement Award, four Canadian Country Music Awards, eleven ECMA Awards, been inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, and has been named to the Orders of Nova Scotia and Canada.
