Rick Famuyiwa Movies Directed: What did Rick Famuyiwa direct?

Our Family Wedding, starring Lance Gross, Carlos Mencia, America Ferrera, and Forest Whitaker Famuyiwa first got involved with the project in 2008, when the presidential campaign was in full swing.

The potential for Barack Obama to become the first African American president inspired Famuyiwa to make a film. He desired it to be an expression of these momentous times of transition.

Famuyiwa recalls the film by saying, “At the time, it seemed that the main topic of conversation was Hispanics electing an African-American president. These forecasts of society’s future in 50 years are widely accepted. We will all need to engage in cross-cultural communication.

The New York Times wrote in its review of the film: “In keeping with actual weddings, the attire is frequently white, as are the characters. The release of Fox Searchlight’s Our Family Wedding on Friday questions that custom.”

Ferrera and Gross play two college students who decide to be married and then have to tell their families and close friends about it in the film Our Family Wedding. When asked about his film, Famuyiwa responds, “Wedding films are often about the inequalities between people, but they haven’t completely dealt with African Americans and Latinos.
