Richard Beckinsale, who starred in the hit sitcoms Rising Damp and Porridge, died in his sleep at the age of 31, leaving a devastated wife and two bewildered young daughters.

“He talked about having high cholesterol but also raged against the National Theatre for not taking him seriously as an actor,” said Stephen Frears, who had dinner with him a few days before he died.

Beckinsale and his five-year-old daughter Kate visited Judy his wife in the hospital the day before he died. He stated that he was tired. He went to a party for The Two Ronnies that night before returning to his home in Sunningdale, Berkshire.
He said he had pains in his arms and chest in a final phone call to friends, but made light of it. He passed out from a massive heart attack after falling asleep. A congenital defect was discovered during the autopsy.
