Pahls was elected to the Nebraska Legislature in 2020 while serving as Omaha’s 5th District City Councilman, a position he held for eight years. Before becoming a councilman, the former Millard Public Schools principal had already served eight years in the Unicameral, having been elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2008.

In honour of Pahls, Gov. Pete Ricketts ordered that all flags in Nebraska be flown at half-staff beginning immediately and continuing until the end of Friday, April 29.

Friends remembered Pahls as someone who could easily shift from a policy of real-world implications to not taking yourself so seriously.

Lincoln state Sen. Adam Morfeld said he was “deeply saddened” by Pahls’ death.

“Rich was an incredibly thoughtful and friendly person and a happy warrior — someone who enjoyed joking around and not taking himself so seriously, but who took the job of representing his constituents and job very seriously,” Morfeld told 6 News.

Pahls was rumoured to be married, but little is known about his personal life. He had two adult children, Jake Pahls and Morgan Morefield, according to reports.
