Dennett died at the age of 82 on April 19, 2024 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine from complications of interstitial lung disease.

Dennett was a prominent figure in the field of philosophy, known for his advocacy of Darwinism and his controversial viewpoints.

Dennett believed that natural processes could explain everything, including concepts traditionally associated with metaphysical or disembodied powers, such as intelligence, free will, and consciousness.

He argued that phenomena like these could be understood through the lens of physical processes, particularly by examining neuroanatomy.

Drawing on Richard Dawkins’s concept of “memes,” Dennett proposed that cultural ideas, akin to genetic information, could be transmitted and evolve over time.

He applied this idea to various aspects of human experience, including music composition, suggesting that even the genius of composers like JS Bach could be explained as the product of Darwinian algorithms.

Dennett’s philosophy rejected the notion of teleology or purposeful creation, asserting that life lacks intrinsic meaning. He criticized beliefs in supernatural explanations, likening them to “skyhooks” – imaginary supports used to avoid acknowledging the absence of inherent purpose.

Throughout his career, Dennett authored several influential books, including “Freedom Evolves” (2003), where he argued for the existence of free will within an evolutionary framework. He contended that individuals with genetic predispositions are not predetermined to certain outcomes, emphasizing the ongoing evolution of free will.

Dennett’s work, though complex, gained widespread recognition and significantly impacted philosophical discourse. He leaves behind a legacy of intellectual rigor and critical inquiry.

Daniel Dennett is survived by his wife, Susan Bell, and their two children.
