Dr. Wecht’s death occurred on Monday, May 13, 2024.

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey described Dr. Wecht as a “larger-than-life” personality who epitomized the spirit of Pittsburgh. Gainey praised Dr. Wecht’s dedication to seeking the truth and extended condolences to his family and friends.

Dr. Wecht gained national recognition for his work on several high-profile cases, including those of JonBenet Ramsey, Anna Nicole Smith, and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Born in 1931 to immigrant parents in rural Greene County, Dr. Wecht grew up in McKees Rocks and the Hill District. He attended Fifth Avenue High School before earning his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1956.

After serving in the Air Force for three years, Dr. Wecht obtained a law degree from the University of Maryland. He then embarked on a distinguished career in forensic pathology, becoming involved in some of the country’s most notable criminal cases spanning decades.

Dr. Wecht began his public service in Allegheny County in 1965 as deputy coroner. He was later elected coroner in 1970 and commissioner in 1980. Throughout his tenure, he consulted on cases such as the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and the Manson family murders.

Despite occasional controversy, Dr. Wecht remained dedicated to his work, often testifying as an expert witness in criminal trials. He notably provided testimony to the House select committee on assassinations, challenging the “lone gunman” theory in President Kennedy’s assassination.

Dr. Wecht married Sigrid Ronsdal in 1961, and together they raised four children, including Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice David Wecht. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren.

A private funeral, burial, and shiva will be held in accordance with Jewish tradition. However, a public memorial service will be organized at a later date to honor Dr. Wecht’s life and legacy.
