Serra, who died at his home in Orient, New York, on March 26, 2024, succumbed to pneumonia, as confirmed by his lawyer John Silberman to the New York Times.

Born in San Francisco in 1939 to a Russian-Jewish mother and a Spanish father, Serra’s artistic journey began with a childhood fascination with ships, inspired by his father’s work in a shipyard.

He later pursued fine art at Yale University, where his encounters with composer Philip Glass and visits to Constantin Brâncuși’s studio in Paris during a fellowship in 1964 profoundly influenced his artistic trajectory.

Known for his massive curved sheets of oxidized steel, Serra’s sculptures, such as “The Matter of Time” series, left an indelible mark on the art world, transforming the spaces they inhabited and evoking physical reactions from viewers.

Throughout his career, Serra remained at the forefront of the contemporary art scene, showcasing experimental materials and pushing the boundaries of traditional sculpture.

His marriage to art historian Clara Weyergraf in 1981 provided him with steadfast support as he continued to create groundbreaking works.

Even in his later years, Serra remained active as an artist, with a 2019 exhibition at New York’s Gagosian Gallery hailed as his “heaviest show ever.”

His dedication to his craft and his unwavering commitment to exploring the possibilities of sculpture earned him recognition as one of the preeminent sculptors of his time.
