By buying four stores from Jack Goldin in the 1960s, he made a key move that eventually led to him acquiring the Pick ‘n Pay grocery business and guiding it to new heights.

He held the position of chairman of the business for many years before retiring in 2010. In addition to his economic savvy, Ackerman was a fervent supporter of consumer rights.

He engaged Anton Rupert and worked nonstop to promote lower cigarette prices. He also criticized government policies, notably those that related to the price of bread.
