Railway Minister: Ghanaians to Soon Travel by Train from Accra to Lagos

The Minister for Railway Development, John Peter Amewu, has unveiled plans for Ghanaians to commute by train from Accra to Lagos, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing railway connectivity across West Africa.

During the launch of the 2025 Africa Prosperity Dialogues in Accra, Minister Amewu reiterated the government’s ambitious agenda to modernize and expand the railway network within the ECOWAS bloc.

He disclosed that feasibility studies have been conducted to facilitate the Trans-ECOWAS line, which will link Lomé in Togo to Ivory Coast, marking a significant step towards regional integration.

Minister Amewu also revealed plans for joint development train projects, such as the initiative between Ghana and Burkina Faso, which unfortunately stalled due to political changes in Burkina Faso.

Addressing challenges in implementing such projects, particularly the financing aspect, the Minister emphasized the importance of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to bridge the viability gap.

Highlighting the potential of railway connectivity between Ghana and Nigeria, Minister Amewu affirmed that traveling by train from Ghana to Nigeria is feasible.

He referenced the ongoing construction of a railway from Ghana to Burkina Faso as a testament to the government’s commitment to regional railway expansion.

Minister Amewu emphasized that closing the viability gap is crucial for realizing such ambitious projects, citing the need for substantial investment to facilitate seamless cross-border transportation.

“With the expansion of our railway network and significant investment, commuting by train from Ghana to Nigeria is within reach,” Minister Amewu stated, underscoring the transformative impact of enhanced railway connectivity on regional trade and mobility.
