Snyder was born in Mercer Island, Washington.

Snyder graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1985.

Snyder was a two-time state basketball player of the year, and he led the team to the 1985 state championship.

It was during Snyder’s time that Mercer Island achieved a No. 1 ranking in USA Today’s high school polls. Snyder was named a McDonald’s All American player, being the first chosen from the state of Washington.

Snyder attended college at Duke University, where he was a point guard for the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team from 1985 to 1989, and his team played in the Final Four in 1986, 1988, and 1989.

Snyder became a starter in his second season (1987) and started almost all games the remainder of his career.

Snyder was elected a team captain and honored as an Academic All-American during his senior season.

Snyder graduated from Duke in 1989 with a double major in philosophy and political science, and, later received a J.D. degree from Duke Law School in 1995 and an M.B.A. degree from the Duke Fuqua School of Business in 1995.

Snyder began his coaching career in the middle of his graduate work and spent the 1992–93 NBA season as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers.

From 1993 to 1995, Snyder served as an administrative assistant to men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski while Snyder completed his MBA and JD at Duke.

After completing both degrees in 1995, Snyder became a full-time assistant coach under Krzyzewski. In 1997, Duke promoted Snyder to associate head coach.

Snyder has been married twice, firstly to Helen Redwine (m. 1999-2006) and secondly to his present wife Amy Snyder (born Amy Weisenburgh, m. 2010).

Snyder is dad to five children—Owen (born December 25, 2002), Madeleine, Tristan, Anika, and Wyatt Snyder. Owen is Quin’s son with Redwine.

At least Anika and Wyatt are confirmed to be Amy’s children. Further details about the coach’s children, however, remain obscure.
