Hunter Biden was convicted on three federal charges this week, marking the conclusion of an emotionally turbulent trial that revealed many difficult and private moments for the Biden family.

During a press conference held jointly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the 81-year-old Biden described his son as “one of the brightest, most decent men I know,” but emphasized, “I will not grant him a pardon.”

“I’m extremely proud of my son Hunter. He has overcome an addiction, he’s one of the brightest, most decent men I know,” Biden stated during a news conference on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

“I am satisfied that I’m not going to do anything — I said I’d abide by the jury decision. I will do that. And I will not pardon him,” he added.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre hinted on Wednesday that Biden had not dismissed the possibility of commuting Hunter’s sentence for the gun charge.

The president has aimed to distinguish his acceptance of the jury’s verdict from rival Donald Trump’s assertion that his legal challenges represent a “rigged” justice system.
