Pom Klementieff was born to a Korean mother and a French-Russian father who was serving as the French government’s consul in Quebec City, Canada.

Eugène Klementieff, a painter, was her grandfather. Because the Korean terms for “spring” and “tiger” have similar pronunciations, her parents picked the name “Pom” for her.

Before her family began traveling frequently because of her father’s business, Klementieff lived in Canada for a year. Prior to moving to France, they resided in both Japan and the Ivory Coast.

As a result of her mother’s illness and her father’s cancer death when she was five, Klementieff was raised by her paternal uncle and aunt.

She referred to her uncle as “like [her] second father” and he passed away on her 18th birthday. Her older brother also committed suicide seven years later, on her 25th birthday.
