A senior police investigator, who requested anonymity, stated that the police investigating the murder of rapper Kiernan Forbes, popularly known as AKA, will not apprehend KwaZulu-Natal businessman Mfundo Gcaba due to insufficient evidence connecting him to the crime.

AKA and his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane were fatally shot outside Wish restaurant in Durban last year. Following the incident, multiple suspects, including Muziwethemba Gwabeni, were arrested and charged with their murder.
It’s reported that Gwabeni, identified as a taxi boss, allegedly received R800,000 to compensate the hitmen responsible for the killings of the two men.
During their investigation, the police revealed that it was Gcaba who transferred the significant sum into Gwabeni’s account. Subsequently, Gwabeni allegedly distributed over R133,000 to each of the suspects for their involvement in carrying out the hit.

According to a police officer familiar with the details of the Forbes murder case, it was straightforward to connect the seven accused individuals to the murder as they collaborated closely and were also interconnected through phone calls.

The police officer also mentioned that the accused individuals had previously faced charges together in other cases.
However, the police officer stated that at present, it was not feasible to establish a connection between Gcaba and the murders.
“The money and the two calls between him (Gcaba) and Gwabeni are not sufficient to effect an arrest or bring him in for questioning.
“The police want to establish a motive and on whose instructions Gwabeni was acting. We believe there are more powerful people involved here,” the police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
When questioned about why Gcaba hadn’t been charged alongside the other accused despite being mentioned in court, KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara declined to comment when speaking with Sunday World: “The matter is still under investigation, and we are not at liberty to comment.”
