He led Move Forward to victory in the 2023 general election, capturing 151 seats. He stated ambitions to run for prime minister of Thailand, forming a coalition with other pro-democracy parties.
However, he was defeated in the first round of parliamentary voting on July 13, 2023, by the military-appointed Senate.
Later same day, on July 19, the Constitutional Court suspended him from being a member of Parliament.
The National Assembly rejected Pita’s second candidature on the same day. Pita is still suspended and therefore unable to run for PM. Pita stepped down as Move Forward’s leader in September 2023.
