In 1986, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on the fall of Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Later, he held leadership positions with the San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Chronicle and Hearst Newspaper Corporation.

In 1991, Bronstein was promoted to the executive editor position at the Examiner. He held that position until 2000.
