Pellegrini, who had been appointed deputy prime minister for investments by then-prime minister Robert Fico in 2016, took office as prime minister on March 15, 2018, following the resignation of his predecessor as a result of the death of journalist Ján Kuciak.
Pellegrini’s Cabinet was confirmed by President Andrej Kiska on March 21. The following week, 81 members of the National Council voted in favor of approving the cabinet. His party was defeated in the 2020 parliamentary contest by Igor Matovi’s populist, anti-corruption party Ordinary People.
