Born on August 12, 1971, in Washington, D.C., Pete Sampras emerged as the third child in the Sampras family, a close-knit unit led by Soterios “Sammy” and Georgia Sampras.

The family’s roots are intertwined with a rich cultural tapestry, as Pete’s mother, Georgia, made the courageous journey from Sparta, Greece, to the United States at the age of 19. Pete’s father, Soterios “Sammy” Sampras, was born in the U.S. to a Greek father, Costas “Gus” Sampras, and a Polish-Jewish mother, Sarah Steinberg.

Imbued with the values of their Greek heritage, the Sampras family attended regular services at the Greek Orthodox Church on Sundays, fostering a sense of community and spiritual connection. Georgia Sampras, Pete’s mother, held a deep belief in the power of prayer, emphasizing the idea that someone above is watching and guiding, regardless of life’s endeavors.

Pete’s early introduction to tennis occurred at the tender age of 3 when he discovered a tennis racket in the basement of his home. Driven by an innate passion for the sport, he spent hours hitting balls against the wall, laying the foundation for a tennis journey that would captivate the world.

The Sampras family expanded beyond Pete, with siblings who have made their own marks in various fields. Stella Sampras Webster, Pete’s older sister, became the women’s tennis head coach at UCLA, contributing to the sport in her own right.

Pete’s younger sister, Marion, chose a path in education, becoming a teacher in Los Angeles. Gus, Pete’s older brother, took on a prominent role in managing Pete’s business activities, including serving as the tournament director at the Scottsdale ATP event.
