Peter Rey Aguilar is an American politician who represents California’s 31st congressional district in the United States. From 2006 until his election to Congress, Aguilar served on the Redlands City Council. Aguilar is the highest-ranking Latino in Congress and the vice-chair of the House Democratic Caucus.

Aguilar began his public service career in 2001, when then-California Governor Gray Davis appointed him Deputy Director of the Governor’s Inland Empire Regional Office, eventually becoming Interim Director.

In 2006, Aguilar became the city’s youngest member of the Redlands City Council when five council members, both Democrats and Republicans, chose him out of 11 contenders to fill an available position.
His colleagues elected him mayor in 2010 and again in 2012. Aguilar was respected as mayor for his professionalism, leadership during difficult financial times, balancing the city budget while developing financial reserves, road upgrades, government transparency, and equitable treatment of municipal personnel.
