In September 2021, Pele had surgery to remove a tumour on the right side of his colon. Although the eldest daughter, Kely stated that he was doing well, he was reportedly re-admitted to intensive care a few days later, before being released on September 30, 2021, to begin chemotherapy.

It was reported that chemotherapy had been suspended and that Pele was under palliative care and being treated only for symptoms such as pain and shortness of breath.
